Seeing Two Sides Of India Through Dor And Slumdog Millionaire

I admit I can now fully appreciate Indian (Bollywood) films. Indians do make great movies — movies that can move you and that could be sometimes life-changing. I have already seen a total of five Indian movies. I have seen Waris Shah, Lagaan, Phir Milenge, Dor and lastly, the highly-acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire. I have seen Dor last Thursday and Slumdog Millionaire yesterday. Phew, two Indian movies in consecutive days. Waris Shah and Lagaan are both not-modern-feel films so I wasn’t very appreciative then; I might have slept along the movie watching. Phir Milenge is very beautiful. Dor is very very beautiful, ten times more beautiful than Phir Milenge (teacher said that). And Slumdog Millionaire? No need for words.

Dor (2006) is about the meeting of two women through their bitter fates. Meera is a newly-married beautiful woman who just got widowed because his husband died at the workplace. Zeenat is the wife of the suspect of the crime. For Zeenat to save her husband from execution, Meera must sign the petition for release. The story revolves around the quest of Zeenat to make friends with Meera and get her sympathy. They became two good friends. Meera was changed along the way into a strong woman. It is in Indian culture that once a wife is widowed, she is deprived of the right to be happy, have fun and enjoy life. She is set to be in a sad state forever. But Zeenat taught her to choose what her heart tells and Meera followed. She became happy. But when Zeenat finally told her purpose, Meera got mad. The ending is very beautiful and exciting. Meera who was then locked by her father-in-law for constantly meeting Zeenat was set free by her grandmother-in-law and went after Zeenat. The two finally met at the train (while it is starting to run). With the classical hand gesture, the film ends in both reconciling and going together to a better life.

Meera really looks like Angel Locsin or Rizzini (of Miss Cebu). The rest of the characters were also great. In Dor you see the beautiful face of India and its culture. You see a colorful glimpse of what it is like to be in India and to be an Indian.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) on the other hand shows the bitter side of India — the slums. (Note: Slumdog is a British film set in India) I am not telling the story here anymore as I am quite sure that most of you have already seen it aftet it won 8 of the 10 nominations it got in the recent Oscar’s. Slumdog Millionaire is simply amazing. Need I say more? The movie did not try hard to be beautiful, it just came out to be. Dev Patel (Jamal) did good in acting naturally. Also his brother and Latika. Whoever made it (I don’t know), the story and the sequencing of events is great. Kudos to Slumdog Millionaire! They deserve all the awards. I just hope they’ll get more great films coming.

And how about Philippines? When will we ever get a taste of Oscar’s?

Lastly, seeing two beautiful films from India within two days is a great experience. It isn’t bad to get out of your own culture and appreciate other countries’ movies. I have also seen a Thai movie and I loved it too. I just hope I’ll get the chance to see more great films from India. Kudos to India and their booming movie industry! Bollywood goes to Hollywood!

Accha, phir milenge!

Play Ultimate Frisbee With Me, Please

Okay, so the title may sound almost demanding, but don’t fret. Anyways, this post is not in a way related to the Wikipedia scandal I posted previously. This post is the reason why I caught that Wikipedia scandal though.

Okay so as you can see I am no sports buff. I don’t spend my holy time in courts or in the field. I spend it in front of the computer — doing this and that. Watching is fun, but doing it is a different thing. As you see I am a loafer. Am I? I don’t know. I have only several games in mind (and heart) that I really wanted to play over and over again. One of which is what we call Ultimate or Ultimate Frisbee. I really once had the misconception that this game is for dogs only. Stupid me; and my classmates are stupid too. Ultimate Frisbee involves a disc, a big field and two teams. The rules are unwritten, no referees or coaches, just pure fun. The game is played similarly to how soccer is played.

Misconception: Frisbee is for dogs. Arf! Source

I learned playing Ultimate Frisbee when I took Recreational Activities for my PE class. Not to be boastful, but I was quite good at it getting the highest score in the practical exam with my pair Arnie. HA-HA. Anyways, we had a big round-robin Ultimate Frisbee tournament and it was so much fun and energizing.

Because of my attraction to such sport, I urged (forced) my friends to play an informal game with me during my birthday last 2007. I think they had fun too.

That was the last. I just had myself drooling with envy to some people playing Ultimate Frisbee in Camp Lapu-lapu in Apas. Damn, when will I ever be able to play it again?

Dang! I lost my green frisbee. Source

That is why I am encouraging (more like forcing or enticing) all my friends out there to come and play Ultimate Frisbee. C’mon, leave your computers there and let’s go out on the big field. It wouldn’t hurt to spend one day outdoors. I just love Ultimate Frisbee. I would really appreciate it if some friends would invite me to a fun game of Ultimate Frisbee. The game would teach us skills such as speed, vitality and alertness. More importantly, teamwork and sportsmanship as this game has no very serious written rules. Sigh, I wish I could play it soon.

PS. If you don’t want Ultimate Frisbee, come swim with me.

The Wikipedia Scandal

BIG UPDATE: Wikipedia already cleaned up this mess. It is just a wrong timing for me to reach the article in such state. So, whoever messed it up must be grinning now. Well, if you want to know what happened prior to the cleaning, read this.

“What the hell” is all I could ever say. I have always believed in the dignity of Wikipedia even though some people are putting it down. Now, I have lost my respect.

While finding an article about Ultimate Frisbee which I was supposed to write about (and will write it later since I’m writing this one now), I stumbled to obviously, Wikipedia. True, yes, they have an article about Ultimate (sport) and it has everything from rules down to strategies and tournaments. Plus one thing, d*ck.

I guess someone must have messed up with Wikipedia that first and foremost, the pictures in the article were all severely unrelated to the sport. What did it show? I won’t show it here (blurred below), but if you want me to describe it instead of seeing it, it is pornography. Well of course I can pinpoint what is pornography from educational pieces so I am pretty sure the pictures are. Good thing they are just sketches and cartoons. HA-HA.

Photobucket

Let me quote the introduction in the article:

Ultimate (also called Ultimate Frisbee or Ultimate Dick) is a limited-contact team sport played with a 175 inch flying d*ck. The object of the sport is to score points by penetrating the d*ck into a player in the “end zone”. Players may not c*m while holding the d*ck.

Okay, see that? D*ck must be disc and c*m must be run. Who ever did that must be the Ultimate Pervert.

There’s more from the article itself. I guess you have to check them out yourself. There are lots lots more in the article that makes it very indecent. Take note that d*ck is disc.

So some may ask hey-whats-your-problem-were-all-grown-ups-here-anyways? Ooops. Wikipedia is the number one online source of knowledge (so they say) as shown by how it stands as the top result in almost all keyword searches. So how about those students, well minors specifically, searching the internet? They can’t just bump into that one. That article is sort of obscene for kids (not for us). I’m just concerned, that’s all. I don’t know who to blame, Wikipedia or the editor? I’d say both. Is Wikipedia not checking if their articles are being messed up?

My only concern is that of Wikipedia’s dignity and role in the world of knowledge. They may be passing on the wrong stuff to everyone without them knowing. All about frisbee and sex, no problem. They’re related in some ways as suggested by this article. But placing such obscenities in Wiki is well, a NO-NO. Wikipedia, take some action now!
