5 Michael Jackson Songs Revived By Pinoys

Michael Jackson‘s death has been a very big item in the news today. His impact to the world may be something that would be considered ‘eternal’ and ‘unending’. His songs have made it high in the billboard charts, have affected every corner of society, have made differences in many people’s lives. Michael Jackson’s influence in the Pinoy music industry is also something noticeable. A lot of growing stars when interviewed usually have Michael Jackson as one of their ‘idols’. The Thriller dance number by the inmates of Cebu two years ago may well prove MJ’s influence even to those outside the borders of the entertainment industry.

Some of our Pinoy singers decided to revive some of Michael Jackson’s masterpieces. Here are 5 songs that were originally sung by Michael Jackson and were revived by Filipino artists.

1. She’s Out Of My Life – Nyoy Volante

In 2004, a new album by Nyoy Volante and the Mannos was released under Vicor Music Corporation. The album contains original songs and revivals, one of which is Michael Jackson’s famous love song, She’s Out Of My Life. Nyoy Volante’s version is simply-rendered and acoustic.

2. Human Nature – Kyla

Kyla, Philippines’ R&B princess, has a modern rendition of Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. If we would actually compare it to the original, Kyla’s is more of having an upbeat feature. Though transformed to a modern version, the greatness of the song still remains. Human Nature somewhat got popular in the local airwaves when Kyla released it in one of her albums.

Kyla looks so young in the video. And I was young too when this song was released. ;-) The video above is a karaoke version. So if you wanna sing along, go ahead. :???:

3. I Just Can’t Stop Loving You – Metafour

This is one of my favorite songs. Unfortunately, I have heard Metafour’s version first before knowing this is originally by Michael Jackson. I even sang this at one overnight session together with Cebu Bloggers Society. Unfortunately, majority doesn’t know about the song.

Wait, you may wonder who the hell Metafour is. It is actually a group of singers who sing amazing songs. They are one of my favorite OPM singers. They are not famous actually. I first heard them through the promotional CD that Close-up gave away many Christmases ago wherein their My Grown Up Christmas List is one of the songs in the CD.

Click I just cant stop loving you – Metafour to listen to the full song. See, there’s even no YouTube video for it.

Metafour’s I Just Can’t Stop Loving You retains the distinct classic-ness that the original holds. I believe they gave justice to the song. I also love the song because I could somehow relate to it. Somehow. :!:

4. Heal The World – Philippine Madrigal Singers

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, originally the University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers, is one of the most awarded choirs in Asia and in the world. The group has consistently won major prizes in the most prestigious international choral competitions for decades. Because of its impressive track record and musical virtuosity, the Philippine Madrigal Singers is now regarded as one of the best choirs in the world. From www.philippinemadrigalsingers.com

Their rendition of Heal The World is simply great! I’ve been listening to it last night many times. The certain eeriness of this version gives the chill that we all need somehow. This is the beauty of Filipino-sung music. Some people’s comments were saying that the music is splendid and world-class. Just listen to it to see that what I’m writing here is true. If interested, you may want to listen to their other songs. Eh, I’m sorry I really appreciate music even if it isn’t what’s cool and hip in the present time.

Listen to PMS – Heal The World – Philippine Madrigal Singers now on iMeem. Such a splendid song.

5. I’ll Be There – Charice Pempengco

Know what, I dislike Charice Pempengco. I also dislike Michael Jackson. But that does not automatically mean I dislike everything about them including their songs, their masterpieces. I’ll Be There is one of the best songs of Michael Jackson. And the world’s newest singing sensation singing it would be, uhmmm, extraordinary?

Charice Pempengco is no doubt talented. I just don’t like her much. Peace! But when I first listened to her version of I’ll Be There, ‘Wow’ is all I could say. I couldn’t find her irritating high screams in the song. And I would strongly say Charice’s version is way better than Mariah’s rendition of I’ll Be There. That’s being unbiased (I told you I dislike Charice).

Charice’s version still retains the original feel of the song but gave it a tinge of modernity. Charice’s voice is peaceful and her being a kiddo singing that song is also a good fit. The part ‘I’ll be there to comfort you…’ of the song is cool. I couldn’t say more. I’m proud of Charice Pempengco’s version of I’ll Be There. Filipinos are really talented people.

The song I’ll Be There is in Charice’s first album, My Inspiration.

Those 5 great songs from our own Pinoy singers do prove that we also have our share of being inspired by the world’s King of Pop’s music. The issue now is that which version may be better, the revival or the original. There is no absolute answer to that because aesthetics, as taught by our Humanities class, is a personal preference and thus relative to each individual. But for me, I’d say that both original and revival fared equally.

Kudos to the Pinoy singers and long live Michael Jackson’s memory and music!

  2. I love all the songs of Michael Jackson. Unfortunately, you did not include my favorite song from him, “Billie Jean” but of course and I think no Filipino attempted to revive this song. Gerald Santos sang this song once in SOP.
