Avatar Movie Review (2009)

Movies 25 December 2009 13 Comments

While everyone hits their butts off watching A Christmas Carol or a rerun of Home Alone, my friends and I (and possibly thousands of others worldwide) chose to watch the critically-acclaimed sci-fi movie we call Avatar. Months ago I mistook Avatar for The Last Airbender. Now there’s one huge difference.

Avatar is a film written and directed by Titanic’s James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.

Worthington plays the crippled marine, named Jake,  who took his brother’s place in the Avatar project and Saldaña plays the na’vi princess Neytiri. I won’t talk about the plot too much. Avatar is all about humans trying to “steal” away the ecosystem of the na’vi’s because of some precious mineral underneath their terrain. In an effort to reach their goal (more like Machiavellian strategy?) they ended up destroying forcefully the na’vi’s environment. The film ended with Jake siding with the na’vi’s and forcing the humans to return to Earth. (If you don’t understand the terms and want to get some spoiler, head here).

The prominent thing about the movie is the electrifying technology-breaker effects and animation. I was like, whoa this could be one of the best sci-fi movies I have seen in years. That plus some heavy sound effects makes it really good. And real. I’ve read reviews clamoring the visuals and effects of Avatar. But I also heard a lot saying that the awesome effects in turn is just a distraction to the boring storyline. Seriously? I don’t find the storyline boring. It was almost predictable though but not boring. I was holding onto the edge of my seat the whole time haha. And I have a soft spot for the creatures especially to the Toruk and the other winged creatures. The characters, the setting, everything was believable. Pandora could even be real. My favorite scene was the final battle wherein the wildlife of Pandora joined the war against the humans. What I loved most of the story is the message that it tries to imply, to be applied on our current society.

Avatar, whether intentional or not, is an environmentalist movie. Pandora may not be Earth but it’s just the same thought. Put ourselves as the na’vi race. Would we allow for our environment to get blasted up? Their Eywa is our Mother Nature. Avatar shows us what would happen if nature gets destroyed. And the human acts in the movie are real. For real. That’s happening in our society right now. Avatar is an effective way to relay the message of environmental awareness to the viewers.

Overall I’d give Avatar a 9 out of 10. Where’s the 1 you ask? It’s hidden inside my system. But a 9 is already a good one. James Cameron said that if Avatar becomes successful, two sequels will be planned. I cannot wait long for the sequels. Avatar has been a good experience. It’s not only a sci-fi flick. It is everything.

One of the movies I can’t wait to watch when I go back to Manila. Hmm, I’m stuck in Olongapo – and there’s no decent cinema here.

Hi Cleve. It’s because of the philosophy “The end justifies the means”. I find that being applied in the film. :D

Altough I was kind of let down after people talked it up too much, I still thought it was a pretty good watch. My sister loved it though. To each their own.
