Beating The Odds: A Book On Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Philippines

On June 30, 2010, a new President will take over the Philippines. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term has come to an end. She’s been our president from 2001 to 2010. That’s around 9 years of being the Chief Executive of the country. I was in Grade 5 when she took over the presidency from Estrada. I graduated college when her term ends. That covers my high school and college years. I literally grew up with Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the president.

This is no joke. I admire how Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stood strong amidst all the issues and problems thrown at her. I know that she is wrapped in controversies and scandals but we can’t deny how strong a president she is. She never stepped down. She’s one strong woman.

Along with her leaving the highest seat in the government, is a book by Renato Velasco and Ricardo Saludo entitled Beating The Odds. No, this is not about how she broke the tradition by having her oath taking here in Cebu; this is about the most major issues during the Arroyo term and how she managed to swerve the country through each and every problem.

From the synopsis of the book:

…the authors have been able to consolidate a portrait of leadership around six issues that stalked the Philippines at the turn of the century—terrorism, the Mindanao peace process, the drug threat, the global emergence of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), an attempted coup d’etat against the government and a hounding budget deficit.

Why We Should Consider Voting For the LPG-MA Party List on May 10

It will be my first time to participate in nationwide elections this coming Monday, May 10. Though I really have no intense feelings about the elections, I acknowledge the fact that every single vote counts. Unless of course when cheating comes in. But this post is not about that.

Talking about putting party lists into the House of Representatives, I don’t know how many party lists will be placed in the government. I heard they use some kind of formula for that, but I’m pretty sure there will be a number of party lists to be chosen from. I believe that one of the party lists we should look on and consider voting for is the Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketer’s Association party list (LPGMA). Why them? Because they advocate on maintaining reasonably priced LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) accessible to household consumers. And we, voters, are all household consumers, right?

Never a time in our economy’s state wherein LPG price never became an important issue. LPG is a prime mover in our country’s economy affecting at least 3 areas, i.e., food security, health and environment. LPG price hikes may affect lots of households and businesses. You don’t want to go back to using firewood or coconut husk in cooking food at home, right? Aside from the hassle, it has an effect on the preservation of trees. Sustained exposure to alternative cooking methods or fuels also result to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Black Lung (based on a study). People like our family who are into food business also get affected with unprecedented LPG price hikes. Everyone gets affected since everyone uses and depends on LPG. So, decide if you want a sector concerned with keeping the LPG price affordable to the masses represented in our government.

LPG-MA party-list #161 is a non-stock, non-profit, organization representing the independent players in the industry. The sectoral group is set to participate in the upcoming May 10, 2010 elections having as its special interest Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) industry and its allied concerns.

On a personal note, LPG-MA will be one of my top choices, but not yet the final one. I will only truly vote for a party list that is in line with my career, social status and views.

New Manny Villar Ad Lyrics: Hindi Bawal Mangarap

I am no Manny Villar supporter but his newest jingle/TV ad entitled Hindi Bawal Mangarap sounds really good. Ipinanganak kang mahirap, Patuloy na nangangarap… Is it because of the lyrics or is it because of the adorable kids singing the new jingle? I find the tune really catchy.

Watch the Manny Villar new TV ad: Hindi Bawal Mangarap below.
