Passionata: A Cultural Heritage Celebration

[30 November 2009] After the Asia-in-a-basket Cebu food bloggers event in SM Foodcourt is the concert Passionata: A Cultural Heritage Celebration. Vanjohnn gave me and other 8 bloggers complimentary tickets to the said concert. Passionata is a concert to showcase Cebu‘s finest group singers, Cebu’s highly-acclaimed songs, the Philippines’ cultural legacy in the field of music and also the whole world’s greatest musical contributions.

Three groups participated in the concert. The first one is a personal favorite, the Asian Troubadours. The other two being the Cebu Chamber Singers and the Mandaue Children’s Choir.

I first came to know Asian Troubadours when a bunch of their sampler CDs were distributed during the DigitalFilipino event in Waterfront. I grabbed one! And when I listened to the CD, I simply could say that it was ecstatic. Their music is amazing, not the amazing kind that will knock you off your feet but something that will peace you down, make you proud, and say that we have brilliant talents here in our very own place. During the 440th Anniversary of Cebu, their song Cebu 440 Overture is the theme song. (Read my Asian Troubadours post)

Here’s my favorite, the Cebu 440 Overture by the Asian Troubadours.

The Cebu Chamber Singers is a 25-member group composed of professionals and music enthusiasts all from Cebu. Founded in July 10, 2006 by Dennis Gregory Sugarol, the Cebu Chamber Singers have went as far as grabbing gold in various competitions both local and international.

The Mandaue City Children’s Choir is unbeatable. Mr. Sugarol, founder of the Cebu Chamber Singers is also the one who directed the Mandaue City Children’s Choir. They have also won several prestigious awards both national and international and have played in other countries alongside other famous Filipino talents like Lea Salonga.

Here’s the song list for Passionata:

Ang Sariling Atin World Masterpieces
Bahay Kubo/Sitsiritsit Diraiton (France)
Cebu 440 Overture Sohran Bushi (Japan)
Si Filemon, Si Filemon/Baleleng Loi Loi Gratong (Thailand)
Matud Nila Sigulempong (Indonesia)
Pasayawa Ko Day Circle of Life (Africa-America)
Bochong Two Guitars (Russia)
Pokpok Alimpako Hava Nagila (Israel)
Ambo Hato River Flows In You (Korea)
Ummah Sallih Sunflower (China)
Gabaq-an Hallelujah Chorus (UK)
Sinulog Ode To Joy (Germany)

The finale is a classic, Ode To Joy. Here’s a video taken during Passionata for Ode To Joy. Watch the rest of the videos here. Thanks Rookie Blogger for taking them.

All in all, the Passionata concert is very satisfying. My personal favorites were the Cebu 440 Overture, Sinulog, Circle of Life, Hallelujah and Ode To Joy. Even though I was sick that time, I still managed to appreciate how good our fellow Cebuanos are and how amazing the musical pieces the world has to offer are. Kudos to Passionata!
