How to Choose a Web Host, YouTube video by Volusion

It’s been a long time since I talked about web hosting, domain and everything related to it. With the demise of my old niche blog (bryankarl.com, inactive), I totally stopped talking about these kind of stuff. But I’ll give it a try one more time.

I’ve had my ups and downs (more downs, I think) in the past with regards to web hosting. My first, Kinohost, really was the biggest problematic host I’ve encountered so far. I have had my share of communicating with the owner though and looks like he had his rough times, which also affected our blogs. I then moved to another host, and yeah, another problem. So I had to move again now this time in a stabler hosting service, my current one.

I am currently hosted inĀ Hosting Services-USA-Taiwan-Philippines. Yeah, quite a long name we’ve got there. Fortunately, their service is quite good. I haven’t encountered blog downtime moments (none that I can remember of) and the customer service is speedy. They’re also affordable that’s why I chose them. Nobody actually recommended them to me; I just saw them in my search. They could not be as amazing as Web Hosting Hub, the Top 1 in website hosting in the Official Top 10 Website Hosting 2011 but they have satisfied my blog needs.

Update: After writing this post, I bumped into a memory_limit error with my blog’s Dashboard. Luckily, my blog host has a live chat feature. And it’s amazing! The guy from their end helped me and problem solved.

After all, I only have a personal weblog — I don’t need much. However, just a few recommendation. If you run a community blog or a magazine-type with lots of contributors (especially showbiz blogs), then I guess you might not want to settle with less. Seek out from web hosting reviews so you’ll get the best for your website or weblog.

Check out this YouTube video by Volusion. It’s entitled How to Choose a Web Host. Watch and learn and try to assess if your current web hosting has the 6 qualities of a good web host. Mine, I say it passed.

Moved To A New Blog Host, But Why?

Yes, I finally moved. My previous host, Tracspace (previously iRock Webhosting), is currently okay but given the incidents from the past few months, I decided to pack my things (aw files) and move away.

Why did I decide to change? Months or weeks (I couldn’t remember) ago, my blog got hacked and it displayed this image below. (Beware it might scare you lol)

I accessed this page just right now through their server’s IP address. Look how they didn’t even remove that up to now. What actually disappointed me that time is how slow they were to assist me in fixing the hack. Yes, I removed by myself the index.php files that the hackers inserted in every folder of the server. When they finally messaged me, they said that THEY fixed the problem already. I didn’t mind that though — them claiming to have helped me. This week, 3 days ago, the server or the name server was down, I’m not sure. I can ping the server’s IP address though so I thought it has to be the name server. I sent a support ticket (Feb 9, 10:48AM), got no answer. I sent another (Feb 10, 8:44PM) and got my response after a few hours (Feb 11, 12:47AM).  That’s 2 days from my first ticket.

I won’t make this too complicated. I understand that servers do go down sometimes; I know that since I work in the IT industry. What I just wanted is to be informed. Being two days late for their reply is such a big turn off. Hence, after a year with Tracspace, I decided to transfer this blog. My Tracspace account won’t be closed until it gets expired though.

My new host is named Hosting Services- USA-Taiwan-Philippines. Too long? It’s really affordable since I got the 600 pesos plan (I might upgrade). And I’m impressed with the quick replies — maybe because the people behind this live in the same timezone as me. Replies take a matter of minutes only. That’s what I’m looking for a decent web host. Tracspace must incorporate that to their system.

That’s it for now. This blog’s now running in a new world. Congrats to me. :)

The Web Hosting Fan Blogs!

I noticed that what I see mostly of sites that talk about web hosting are those that give out web hosting ratings and reviews. Now let’s sing another tune. While I see such kinds of sites to be useful for potential buyers, they may not be good sources of tips and guides for stuff related to web hosting. Why? ‘Coz they’re too specific! Let’s look the other way around.

Here’s a website named the Web Hosting Fan. I think it is more appropriate to call it a blog. Yes, blog. This blog is just starting to grow. With 16 RSS subscribers and 26 Twitter followers? That’s quite a number huh. I see it’s still in its baby steps. But I see potential.
